# Numeracy

Numeracy is the process of using numbers and thinking in quantitative terms, to solve a problem or complete a task.  This skill is typically associated with measurement, estimation, conversions, percentages, scheduling and calculation.

Examples of common numeracy materials in the trades includes:

• Measurements and conversion equivalents
• Calculations
• Estimation of area
• Scheduling, budgeting and accounting
• Money math
• Data analysis

Examples of how Numeracy skills are used by the trades:

 Automotive Service Technicians (NOC 7321) compare measurements of energy, dimension, speed, horsepower, temperature and torque to specifications Carpenters (NOC 7271) take measurements to determine alignments, elevations and grades using surveying equipment Electricians (NOC 7241) estimate times and materials required for projects Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanics (NOC 7312) calculate size and volume of cylinders and tanks to determine capacity in litres or gallons Industrial Mechanics and Millwrights (NOC 7311) calculate the size and number of steel plates needed to support the weight of industrial equipment Plumbers (NOC 7251) calculate rolling offsets to design, fabricate and install piping around obstacles
